How to organize your bedroom

The bedroom can be organized in different ways depending on how you use. Some people have it as just a bedroom while others incorporate quiet spaces, study space etc.

This article will focus on just the bedroom space, following articles will cover quiet and study spaces. But for a general guide, ensure the space is clearly set out and any items purchase match the aesthetic you want for the whole room.

Review what you want to keep in your bedroom, this will include clothing. Go through your drawers, wardrobe, tall boy and any items on top of furniture or under beds. You can break this down into sections which can be done daily/weekly rather than all at once. Remove items that have migrated into the bedroom but belong in another room.

Clothes

Sort your clothing into the following piles: every day wear, special occasion, seasonal, donation, rubbish and sentimental value. Sentimental and seasonal clothing could be stored into tubs or quilt bags and place in the wardrobe or even under the bed. Special occasion attire could be put into Dustproof garment protectors to be ready for wear whenever you need it. Every day wear can be sorted whatever way suits you and the use of foldable closet organisers for underwear, socks, bra etc, make getting ready in the morning so much faster. Personally, I have drawers for my active wear, sleepwear, lounge wear and then underwear. My workwear is separate in the wardrobe from my casual wear and outfits on the same hanger for fast options in the morning.

A shoe rack for your everyday shoes with shoe boxes under it for those special occasion shoes help neaten the space in your wardrobe. Using cubes or storage boxes for other items and having them clearly labelled also helps. In our house we have additional bedding and towels (for the ensuite) in the wardrobe.

On top of your wardrobe you can store products in storage tubs, cubes or quilt bags. On top of tall boys and drawers the use of necklace holders and make up organisers help to create space for personal touches like photos and candles.

If you have space under you bed, use it! We store suitcases which are full of seasonal clothing, but you can also use it for extra bedding or any other storage requirements. Bed tables if you use them are your space, make sure that it is relaxing to you. Use of a cable holder if you have electronics by your bed can make the space look neater. Ensure the drawers are filled with only what you need in the bedroom (sleeping bonnet/eye mask/ear buds/books etc).

Simple touches like curtain holders, photos or mementos and single shelving can elevate a room to your own personal space.
